This year's first day of school felt so different than previous years. Averson conceded to a very brief school shopping trip at a local thrift store, Sydney is homeschooling this year, and Eli isn't in school and instead is working a full-time job where he wears a collar and has his own desk.
Last night, Sydney casually mentioned that because she's doing homeschool, she's on track to graduate a year early. Meaning that this very well may be her last first day. And Averson is in 8th grade, so it's her last first day of middle school.
And my sweet boy still humors me and posed with his sisters on the way out the door
Averson missed her ride with her dad because it was his first day too and he was anxious to get his room set up, so she and Sydney took off together. I've become my grandmother, standing on the front porch waving goodbye to everyone with my coffee in one hand, trying to pretend that I'm not crying.
The report tonight from everyone is that their days weren't capital "G" great, but they weren't as bad as they worried they'd be. Averson found friends and is excited about her Advanced Art class. Sydney is feeling a bit overwhelmed by the amorphous nature of her school now, but she bought herself a planner and is managing her anxiety through office supplies and planning (her mother's daughter.)
